Iron Man is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963), and was created by writer-editor Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. Anthony "Tony" Edward Stark, after suffering a severe heart injury and being kidnapped, was forced to build a devastating weapon. He instead created a suit of power armor to save his life and help protect the world as the superhero Iron Man. He is a wealthy industrialist and genius inventor who created military weapons and whose metal suit is laden with technological devices that enable him to fight crime. In the character's original incarnation, Iron Man was a vehicle for Stan Lee to explore Cold War themes, particularly the role of American technology and business in the fight against communism. Subsequent re-imaginings of Iron Man have gradually removed the Cold War themes, replacing them with more contemporary concerns such as corporate crime and terrorism. Stark Industries, later also known as Stark International, Stane International, Stark Innovations, Stark/Fujikawa and currently Stark Enterprises, is a fictional multi-billion dollar business owned and run by billionaire Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark, also known as Iron Man. The company appears in stories published by Marvel Comics and exists in that company's shared universe, known as the Marvel Universe. It first appeared in Tales of Suspense #40 and was founded by Howard Stark, Tony's father. According to Forbes 25 largest fictional companies it had an estimated sales of $20.3 billion. In the film version of Iron Man, Stark Industries has a logo similar to that of Lockheed Martin and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as SIA. Iron Man's armor refers to the powered metal suit worn by Tony Stark when he assumes his superhero role of Iron Man. The first version of the armor was created by Stark with the help of Ho Yinsen. Unlike most other superheroes, the appearance of Stark's armor has radically changed over the years, either as a result of modifications made by Stark or specialized armors created for specific situations.
